Statement: She the People on Mass Shooting in Monterey Park, California

At a time when our Asian American community should be celebrating the Lunar New Year, we once again find ourselves grieving the loss of community members to yet another senseless act of gun violence.

On Saturday night, a gunman opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park, California, killing 10 people and injuring 10 more. We cannot ignore that the majority of those living in Monterey Park are Asian American. While we wait for more information to be released about the attack, our hearts are broken for the victims and their families.

We call on our nation’s leaders and the public to prioritize real safety solutions that protect our communities. The lack of real action on issues such as gun violence and mental health is a clear indicator that we need more women of color leaders in power to speak truth about the need for safety in our communities.
