A'shanti Gholar
Washington, DC | Emerge America
In the chaos and uncertainty of running for office, there is A’shanti. She is the calm in the storm and a guide for what for many women of color is the first foray into public service. Her career has been dedicated to making sure women are fully engaged in politics and she has worked in leadership positions at the Democratic National Committee, United Way and was a political appointee to the U.S. Department of Labor by the Obama administration. She is currently the political director at Emerge America, the only national organization which recruits and trains Democratic women to run for office. In her role, she works with Emerge’s partners and affiliates to recruit women to run for key seats. She has trained and cultivated a network of leaders, many of whom will be on the ballot in 2020 at the local and state level.
To elevate the voices of women of color and make sure they are well-informed, A’shanti founded The Brown Girls Guide to Politics, which was named the #2 best political podcast to prepare people for the 2020 election.
What is the song you will listen to on repeat in 2020?
“Run the World (Girls) by Beyoncé.”
What are you reading right now?
“Moving Forward by Karine Jean Pierre. It is important to see a young, Haitian, LGBTQ woman and mother out there talking about politics.”
Who is your plus one?
“Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy of Virginia. She ran for office while pregnant and has been a force in the House of Delegates for Virginia to be the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. For a black woman to get this historic legislation passed will be a testament to how far we’ve come and our perseverance.”
