Rashida Tlaib
Detroit, Michigan | Member of the U.S. House of Representatives
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) was one of the first voices, even in her primary before being elected, to call for the impeachment of Donald Trump. On a whole host of issues, from clean water to housing to migrants at the border, she has stood strong on issues important to millions, issues that will motivate people to the polls in 2020. She is the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. As a member of the “Squad,” the fearless group of progressive freshman women of color in the House who have been vocal opponents of the Trump administration and its policies, she embodies what multiracial solidarity looks like. In public and private, she has shown up as a woman with courage and the integrity to speak truth to power in the name of justice for the most vulnerable people among us.
In 2020, Rep. Tlaib will remain focused on serving her constituents of the 13th Congressional district. Solving their issues is her top priority while also working to push for transformative change through policy in the House. She takes her responsibility to improve their quality of life very seriously. Her goal in the next year is to “make the table bigger for marginalized communities to ensure that the right decisions are made on their behalf.”
What are you reading right now?
“It is hard to finish reading anything I start because I am so busy. I like to listen to podcasts since I can listen on the go. Usually, I like to read books that have an inspirational or spiritual message.”
Who is your plus one?
“My sister-in-service, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, is an amazing person. The way she conveys her love for the people, the fight for justice, is like music to one’s ears. She is rooted in such strong values and I’m so fortunate to be able to serve with her.”
