Tram Nguyen
Richmond, Virginia | New Virginia Majority
Deeply rooted in her community, Tram’s work comes from a place of love where people and their needs come first. She says it took years to create authentic spaces for everyone to have a voice and to develop relationships with communities which has allowed Democrats to flip the state from red to blue in recent years. Instead of engaging voters in a transactional way, Tram’s organization works with communities of color and young people to find out what’s important to them and encourages them to vote in order to create a better world for all of us.
As co-executive director of the New Virginia Majority, Tram is focused community building for the long-term. Their organizers have knocked on the doors of over 1 million potential voters and have registered more than 200,000 voters since 2015. Her goal in 2020 is for New Virginia Majority to turn non-voters into voters and voters into leaders in their communities. They will do this by deepening their relationships in communities, turning out voters and meeting with elected officials to advocate for voting rights, a living wage and fair housing.
What is the song you will listen to on repeat in 2020?
“Anything with an uplifting beat that I can rock to.”
What are you reading right now?
“A book I keep meaning to read is How to Fight White Supremacy by Akiba Solomon. One of our organizers, a returning citizen, is featured in it.”
Who is your plus one?
“Jennifer Granado, our director of administration. It’s easy to recognize folks in movement work who do speeches and are on TV. But you don’t often see the foundational people that make it all happen. She is one of them, she’s a rock star.”
