Aimee Allison's Official Statement on Mob Storming the Capitol
What we are witnessing at the U.S Capitol and in the Georgia state capitol is an absolute disgrace to our democracy. In stark contrast to the electoral Senate race victories in Georgia led by Black and brown women that reflect the possibility of a united country that embraces all races, the reckless storming of the Capital represents the worst of America who resist this.
Make no mistake: This is a coup led by white supremicists. This is a coup and an attack on the peoples’ representatives and the rule of law.
Trump has incited this coup. His desperate effort to stay in office threatens all of us. As protestors hang the Confederate flag in the Capitol hallway, it’s clear that white supremacy has infiltrated the halls of that building. We know from the election results in Georgia that together we have the power to contain these anti-democratic forces. We must.
Trump and his enablers bear the brunt of responsibility for this attempted coup. This is a direct result of hatred and racist remarks spewed from our President and the legislators, who, minutes before the infiltration, were denouncing the legitimacy of the election. These legislators do not represent us. These protesters do not represent us.
We must immediately remove Trump and permanently ban on him from holding federal office.
