STATEMENT: She the People on Reported Supreme Court Roe and Casey Decision

SAN FRANCISCOShe the People Founder and President Aimee Allison released the following statement on reports that the Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey

“For years women’s rights and abortion rights advocates have been sounding the alarm that this day would come. Now, if the reports are true, the day is near. After decades of advancement, the Supreme Court will end federal protection of a woman’s right to choose, taking this country back nearly 50 years. We shouldn’t be surprised however, as the Court has shown with its attack on voting rights, that it will continue to pursue avenues to weaken the growing multicultural and progressive base of this country, particularly women of color.

“If indeed this is the intent of the court, we can not let this stand. Organizations such as Sister Song, and All Above All have been active on the ground to make sure women of color have affordable access to abortions and healthcare. Our endorsed women of color Congressional candidates such as Attica Scott in Louisville, Kentucky have made abortion rights a cornerstone of the midterm push to motivate the base and keep Democrats in the majority. These women have been advocating for legislation at the state level to protect our most basic human right to choose what happens with our bodies. More now than ever, we need to support women of color who are organizing our communities and voters, and to embolden our women of color candidates to take an even more vocal stance against the attacks on our most fundamental rights, like access to quality, affordable healthcare of which abortion is key.

“While this decision would be a blow to our collective progress, it is also a charge to make sure we get out to vote for women of color at every level of government who reflect and advance our interests. In many cases, such as this one, our very lives and livelihoods depend on it.”
