STATEMENT: She the People on President Biden’s

State of the Union Address

SAN FRANCISCO – She the People Founder and President Aimee Allison released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address:

“During the State of the Union, President Biden laid out a hopeful vision for America. As we begin Women’s History Month, it was remarkable to see the President deliver his address standing in front of the first woman and woman of color to serve as Vice President seated alongside the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. However, even as we applaud this historic moment for our nation, we can not not ignore critical policies on the table that Democrats must pass while they have full control of the House, Senate, and the White House. While his agenda is aspirational, the reality is that President Biden continues to appeal to the hope of failed bipartisanship, much of which has been unfruitful in passing substantive legislation that will actually build a better America.

“The President spoke about the importance of provisions such as extending the Child Tax Credit and decreasing the costs of childcare. We heard about the importance of paid leave, raising the minimum wage, and paycheck fairness for all. President Biden discussed investing in our Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Community Colleges and called for the passing of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, all efforts that will certainly improve quality of life for women of color, protect our democracy, and our communities. But what we know is that obstinance from the Republican Party continues to hinder any progress on meaningful change for this country. The real question is what President Biden and the Democrats are willing to do to ensure that his vision of a better America is realized.

“Overall, we applaud President Biden for the work he and his administration has done thus far. He saved America from post-pandemic peril and is now doing what is required to protect democracy abroad. However, if we are unable to do the same at home - which includes ensuring the rights of women of color to vote in communities across the country are protected and that Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson is confirmed to the Supreme Court - the likelihood of Democrats keeping the House and the Senate, along with the security of our American ideals, will continue to be at risk.”
