She the People on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson SCOTUS Confirmation Hearings

SAN FRANCISCOShe the People Founder and President Aimee Allison released the following statement on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court of the United States confirmation hearings:

“What we’ve seen over the past week is that the Republican Party plans to stick to its typical playbook of false attacks on Judge Jackson, rooted in their tradition of both explicit and thinly-veiled racism and sexism. When it comes to people of color in leadership, and especially Black women, there seems to be no low point in attempts to destroy their character and to cast doubt about ability and qualification. As the confirmation hearings begin today, we can certainly hope for better from the GOP, but can expect to see more of the same.

“What is most important during this process, however, is that Democrats are adamant that the truth about Judge Jackson’s merits and judicial record remain at the forefront during the hearing. Democrats must give Judge Jackson every opportunity to publicly correct false accusations about her stances on key issues, and they must call out their Senate colleagues when these falsehoods are made against her. Democrats should be ready and on the offense to protect Judge Jackson’s personhood and judicial legacy as she ascends to the SCOTUS bench.

“These confirmation hearings will be a test case for us. Black women, and all women of color, will be watching to see how this process unfolds. This week’s hearings will assure women of color whether or not Democrats are ready and willing to fight for us, for our representation on the nation’s highest court, and for the issues that matter most to us that will be decided by the Supreme Court. The impact of this week’s proceedings will be top of mind as we head to the polls for the upcoming midterm elections.”
